The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding Obamacare, is likely to please more women than men, according to new Millionaire Corner research, which finds that women express a higher level of support for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Women are also more inclined to feel that President Obama is more closely aligned with their personal values than his opponent, Mitt Romney.
Sixty percent of women investors surveyed by Millionaire Corner in June said they agreed with Obamacare in “its entirety” or supported one or more specific provisions of the law. Roughly half the men surveyed (51 percent) said they supported some or all of the act. ( Millionaire investors appear mixed on the law.)
The gender gap widens over support for specific provisions of the act. Nearly 84 percent of women – compared to 71 percent of men – support the provision banning insurance companies from denying coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition. And, more than two-thirds of the women “agree” or “strongly agree” with the portion of Obamacare allowing young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance plans until they turn 26. Less than 60 percent of men agree or strongly agree with this provision. (The costs of health care rank among the top personal financial concerns of affluent investors.)
The health care issue appears to be one of several factor increasing Obama’s appeal to women voters. Nearly 54 percent of women participating in our June survey identified Obama as the candidate “most aligned” with their opinions. Less than 40 percent of the men surveyed said they believed Obama best reflected their stances on issues.
While both men and women overwhelmingly rank the economy as the most important issue to consider when selecting the next president (45 percent vs. 44 percent, respectively), women are more likely than men to rank healthcare, unemployment, social issues and taxes as most important, while men are more likely to identify the national debt and national security as most important issues.
Obamacare also enjoys a relatively high level of support from non-Millionaire vs. Millionaire investors, according to our research.
